Introduction
Prior to commencing any research involving human participants or the collection of human data, students are required to submit and obtain approval for an ethics application. This requirement applies to all research activities conducted by the undergraduates and postgraduates of coursework programs, including those conducted as part of a dissertation project.
Every application must go through Defence Research Proposal (DRP) prior to application of the ethical approval. It is mandatory for every applicant for ethical approval to include proof of DRP[FA1] approval. Once the ethical application is submitted, it will be reviewed by a panel, and the decision will be endorsed by the Ethical Review Committee (ERC) during its monthly meeting. Any project identified as More than Minimal Risk (MMR) will be forwarded to the UiTM Research Ethics Committee (REC) for further review and approval. Applications that are not classified as MMR, fulfil all ethical approval requirements, and are satisfactorily reviewed will receive a formal approval letter from the faculty’s ERC. Data collection and any related research activities may commence only after receipt of this written approval.
Under no circumstances should research activities begin prior to receiving official ethics approval from the faculty or university (for those identified as More than Minimal Risk). Failure to comply with this requirement may result in disciplinary or academic consequences.
Further detailed guidance on the ethics application process will be provided to students in advance of their dissertation project.
