DS971 - Doctor in Dental Public Health (DrDPH)
Doctor of Dental Public Health is a postgraduate degree awarded following the satisfactory completion of a programme of study in dental public health theory, research and clinical applications related to preventive dentistry.
It is a three-year full-time mixed mode programme comprising of theory, clinical, residency and research work. Mode of teaching includes lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, clinical sessions and seminars that are conducted in an integrated manner to encourage self-directed learning. Dental Public Health theory and Clinical Prevention methods of treatment will be covered comprehensively throughout the course.
The first and second year includes the Dental Public Health core course which covers the theory and clinical modules. Candidates are required to conduct a research project in year one leading to a dissertation which needs to be submitted in Year 3. Students are also required to publish their research work in a refereed journal.
The focus of this program is on preparing experienced professionals for advanced practice and leadership positions in dental public health. The DrDPH Program trains future dental public health professionals to assess and analyze public health problems and to develop, implement, and evaluate public health programs and policies nationally and internationally.
This program recognizes that students have their own strengths to bring to the classroom in regard to their areas of interest. The practice of public health is a broad, multidisciplinary undertaking incorporating the contributions of many academic disciplines into the analysis of solutions to public health problems. Public health leaders require understanding of the organizational, social, behavioral, legal, and bureaucratic complexities involved in resolving public health problems. This program’s goal is to provide DrDPH students with interdisciplinary expertise. The DrDPH Program includes a residency /practicum course whose very nature promotes this goal.

Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the three year period in the form of semester tests, projects/assignments, seminars and clinical requirements.
The DrDPH programme is a mixed mode course with research occupying 50% (maximum) of total program time. This project may be a new and independent one or be a discrete part of an existing research program.
Another 50% comes from the coursework of the programme which address the Dental Public Health specialist training requirement.
The programme of study shall consist of DrDPH programme courses, clinical component, residency component and a programme of supervised research, leading to the submission of a dissertation. The DrDPH programme modules, continuous assessments and the dissertation must each be completed satisfactorily or passed.
Another 50% comes from the coursework of the programme which address the Dental Public Health specialist training requirement.

Residency Component;
DrDPH students are required to engage in a practice experience in addition to the activities undertaken as part of their dissertation, so that they will experience a variety of public health practice settings and approaches. The residency can be fulfilled by engaging in a project experience.
The candidate shall, before commencing the dissertation to be described in the research proposal presentation, secure the approval of the Faculty of Dentistry for the topic chosen and the supervisors.

Full time only. Minimum 6 parts (3 years); maximum 10 parts (5 years). Each part consists of 21 weeks of academic schedule, with total of 42 weeks per year excluding of examination weeks.
