DS971 - Programme Structure



The DrDPH programme is a mixed mode course with research occupying 50% (maximum) of total program time. This project may be a new and independent one or be a discrete part of an existing research program. Another 50% comes from the coursework of the programme which address the Dental Public Health specialist training requirement.

The programme of study shall consist of DrDPH programme courses, clinical component, residency component and a programme of supervised research, leading to the submission of a dissertation. The DrDPH programme modules, continuous assessments and the dissertation must each be completed satisfactorily or passed.


DrDPH Programme modules;

  1. Clinical Prevention
  2. Global Health Policy
  3. Advanced Research Methodology
  4. Information and Communications Technology in Oral Health Promotion
  5. Updates in Dentistry

Clinical Component;

  1. Supervised clinical sessions
  2. Supervision of undergraduate clinical sessions

Residency Component;

DrDPH students are required to engage in a practice experience in addition to the activities undertaken as part of their dissertation, so that they will experience a variety of public health practice settings and approaches. The residency can be fulfilled by engaging in a project experience.


The candidate shall, before commencing the dissertation to be described in the research proposal presentation, secure the approval of the Faculty of Dentistry for the topic chosen and the supervisors.
