DS971 - Programme Description

 

 

Doctor of Dental Public Health is a postgraduate degree awarded following the satisfactory completion of a programme of study in dental public health theory, research and clinical applications related to preventive dentistry.

It is a three-year full-time mixed mode programme comprising of theory, clinical, residency and research work. Mode of teaching includes lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, clinical sessions and seminars that are conducted in an integrated manner to encourage self-directed learning. Dental Public Health theory and Clinical Prevention methods of treatment will be covered comprehensively throughout the course.

The first and second year includes the Dental Public Health core course which covers the theory and clinical modules. Candidates are required to conduct a research project in year one leading to a dissertation which needs to be submitted in Year 3. Students are also required to publish their research work in a refereed journal.

The focus of this program is on preparing experienced professionals for advanced practice and leadership positions in dental public health. The DrDPH Program trains future dental public health professionals to assess and analyze public health problems and to develop, implement, and evaluate public health programs and policies nationally and internationally. This program recognizes that students have their own strengths to bring to the classroom in regard to their areas of interest. The practice of public health is a broad, multidisciplinary undertaking incorporating the contributions of many academic disciplines into the analysis of solutions to public health problems. Public health leaders require understanding of the organizational, social, behavioral, legal, and bureaucratic complexities involved in resolving public health problems. This program’s goal is to provide DrDPH students with interdisciplinary expertise. The DrDPH Program includes a residency /practicum course whose very nature promotes this goal.

Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the three year period in the form of semester tests, projects/assignments, seminars and clinical requirements.
