The Doctor in Prosthodontics programme is 3-year, full time programme aimed to provide a learning framework that allow candidate to advance the academic and clinical skills in aspects of prosthodontics which leads to specialist registration. The degree of Doctor in Prosthodontics is awarded on the basis of completions of a course work including specialist clinical training and submission of a dissertation.
 

Specialist Clinical Training
Candidate will attend overview lectures, seminars, clinical work and other relevant activities according to the prescribed content of the programme.
Throughout three years of training, candidate will perform advanced Prosthodontics management under close supervision of experienced specialists that been trained from various academic backgrounds. This includes Removable Prosthodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Implant Dentistry, Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics.

Candidate is required to manage complex cases, which include aesthetic dentistry, maxillofacial defects and full mouth rehabilitation. Integrated interdisciplinary approaches with other specialities such as Periodontics, Endodontics, Orthodontics also will be conducted through specialist joint clinics. These will enhance and strengthen their clinical competency in management of various prosthodontics cases.
Additional trainings is provided in the practical aspects of extended patient care and patient-oriented research in the field of Prosthodontics, including the ethics of clinical research and effective communication of clinical research results.

Candidate is assessed continuously thorough out the three years period in the form of semester tests, projects/assignments, seminars and clinical requirements. Candidate will need to prepare a cumulative log summarising the practical work performed in the field of Prosthodontics for presentation to the supervisors or examiners if requested at the interim and final examinations.

In the final part of the program, candidates have the opportunity to undergo local and oversea clinical attachments at appointed centres to establish their proficiency in Prosthodontics.
 

Dissertation
The dissertation should give evidence of the candidate’s ability to perform research, that the candidate has shown originality and independence, and that the candidate has made a significant contribution to knowledge in the particular field towards improving oral healthcare delivery. Completed and successful dissertation should be accepted by the panel of examiners appointed by the university. The research should be of a kind which a diligent and competent student is expected to complete within the three years of the study programme.


The Doctor in Prosthodontics is three-year, full time programme aimed to provide a learning framework that allow candidates to advance the academic and clinical skills in aspects of prosthodontics. This is a coursework programme comprising of a clinical management based on the current concepts and research work. The course provides comprehensive and incorporated different teaching modalities in obtaining and preparing the student to the highest expectation in patients’ care.

Mode of teaching will vary in the form of overview lectures, seminars, journal club discussions, tutorials, demonstrations, hands-on workshop, simple laboratory work, in-house and out-house clinical sessions in different environment that are accompanied in an integrated manner to encourage and establish self-motivated directed learning.

The students will be allocated with variation of referral cases as explained in the log book summary. The list is non-exhaustive act as a checklist to ensure the widest coverage of advanced Prosthodontics management. Clinically, this programme will provide sufficient clinical experience to be proficient in the comprehensive treatment of a wide range of oral rehabilitation / prosthodontic cases such tooth wear, implant prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthodontics.

Continuous assessment will be evaluated thorough out the three-year period in the form of semester tests, pre-clinical projects, written assignments, seminars and clinical requirements.

Minimum Requirement
  • BDS or equivalent
  • 2 years clinical experience of continuous clinical work experience after graduation from dental school
  • Hold Master of Science in Dentistry (MScD) or equivalent Masters’ programmed endorsed by the Senate, UiTM

Other Requirement
  • 2 referee reports
  • Passed entrance interview and prescribed test
  • Registrable with MDC for local and approved by senate for overseas to practice in the faculty
  • IELTS Average Band 6.5
    (minimum Band 6.5 for every part)

Valuable aspects for consideration
  • Successful completion of the Primary Examinations of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS), Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties (MJDS) or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate degree involving clinical training.
  • Applicants who have passed Postgraduate Basic Medical Science may request for exemption of Core Medical & Oral Sciences course.
Evidence in research publications would be highly regarded

 

Health Status :
Applicants to clinical programmes need to provide evidence to the University that they are free from Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C upon acceptance into the programme.


Full time only. Minimum 6 parts (3 years); maximum 10 parts (5 years). Each part consists of 21 weeks of academic schedule, with total of 42 weeks per year excluding of examination weeks. One week is also allocated at the end of each semester 1-5 for dissertation / research work.
